This month’s featured image by Ellen Caillouet, is a contemporary piece made of leaded stained glass panel using lead and zinc came matrix, and various colored and textured glasses. The round red "jewel" is German-made faceted glass. Ellen is an active member and a master craftsman in the Louisiana Crafts Guild, and served as vice president on the board of directors for 5 years. Her work can be seen in her and her husband’s studio, Absolut Art Glass Studio, located at 114 South Long Street, in Lafayette. She also has pieces at the Lafayette Artist Association Gallery, River Oaks Gallery in Alexandria, and in Cajun Spice Gallery, in Lafayette. Dear Friends of LCEF:
I got to hear New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu sing It’s a Wonderful World with His Excellency Kacinskas from the Republic of Lithuania at the recent World Cultural Economic Forum and that’s when the impact of Louisiana culture really hits home. We’ve shared our culture with the world and now they’re singing it, dancing it, and playing it right back to us. While cultural leaders from all over the world are sharing information about how to strengthen their own communities, we at LCEF are coming to recognize the need for a convening of our own. Stay tuned for information regarding a collaboration between LCEF and the state Office of Cultural Development as we develop a new way for producers and leaders in our cultural and economic development industries to interact and share information.
I would also like to welcome new LCEF Board member, Sherri McConnell. She is the former Director of Louisiana Entertainment through the Louisiana Office of Economic Development, and is an experienced consultant. She is heavily involved in creative content and entertainment space development within the state. We are fortunate to have her.

LCEF is excited to announce that our 2012 Economic Opportunity Fund grant deadline is August 1, 5pm CST. Applications will be available online by June 15. We recommend that you review our guidelines before beginning your application process even if you have applied in the past. Some things have changed, for example, maximum grant amounts and required attachments.

You can help reduce your risk of developing both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers by incorporating sun protection into you daily routine.
Sunscreen continues to be one of the safest and most effective sun protection methods available. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends using sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher as one important part of a complete sun protection regimen which includes seeking shade, covering up with clothing including a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses, and avoiding tanning and UV tanning booths.
Over the past 40 years melanoma rates have increased by 800 percent among young women and 400 percent among young men ages 18-39. Visit skincancer.org for more information.

The Lousiana weather has been downright beautiful lately, just in time for all the spectacular outdoor fun spring and summer has to offer. Festivals, crawfish boils, graduations, whatever may be going on, it’s time to turn off the television, get off the couch and head outdoors!
