The primary mission of LCEF is to be a catalyst for the development and enhancement of the distinct cultural industries of Louisiana by promoting the economic health and quality of life of our cultural economy workforce.
The Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation (LCEF) was launched as a result of then Lieutenant Governor Mitchell J. Landrieu’s Cultural Economy Initiative in late 2005. Its first two years of service were dedicated to disaster relief and recovery of cultural economy workers affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita with almost $1 million distributed for their support.
In January 2008, LCEF’s then recently concluded strategic plan guided us to implement two major programs: LCEF Economic Opportunity Fund (LCEF-EOF), and our LCEF Healthcare Initiative (LCEF-HI). These programs moved our organization out of a disaster relief mode and into a proactive economic development and quality of life focus. The programs provide access to capital and access to healthcare, and support our cultural workers’ ability to earn a decent living and maintain a respectable quality of life. To date, the LCEF-EOF has raised and distributed over $1 million to more than 400 artists, cultural organizations and businesses. LCEF-HI has served the needs of over 1,500 individuals through healthcare referrals and screenings.
Our state’s cultural economy industry is a $12 billion industry, and it is an important business sector with 150,000 jobs statewide. Cultural workers make up almost 8% of our workforce. The majority of these workers are low income wage-earners and often go unnoticed as a relevant sector of our business community, and are overlooked in relation to specific support and services.
To better support our cultural workers’ needs, LCEF recently completed a new strategic plan that will guide the organization through the next three to five years
LCEF was established as a 501(c)3 organization in 2005. Its primary mission is to be a catalyst for the development and enhancement of the distinct cultural industries of Louisiana by promoting the economic health and quality of life of our cultural economy workforce.
